Rome 2017
After 6 years I finally made it back to Rome. I LOVE Rome. The food, the people, the history everything about it. I was on my own for this portion of the trip but I was lucky enough to meet this lady named Laura from Lithuania that spends a lot of time there. She’s a very interesting person as she is a global antiquities dealer and actress. She showed me around to some of the best restaurants and men’s shopping stores. I bought a couple of really nice blazers. Every time I shop in Italy the people at the store always laugh when sizing me up and say “model size” as I am the same size as what they put on the mannequins. The Italian men are the same size as me as opposed to me trying to find a suit that fits me in North America is almost impossible.
I told Laura that I don’t drink wine but like cocktails. She pulled out her laptop and said ” You’ll love this place” It’s called the Jerry Thompson Speakeasy. You have to fill out a quiz on their site on the prohibition area, if you get enough answers correct they send you a password that’s only good for that day. You then phone them with it and make a reservation. Ours was for 11:00 PM as we had dinner plans before that. The place was brutal to find. It was away form the touristy areas as it’s a local hangout. We finally found the place and were abound 15 minutes late. There was no signage, just an address and a big wooden door. I knocked on the door and a little slider opened up immediately and I could only see a guys eye poking out at me. He says something in Italian. I say ” I’m sorry I don’t speak Italian, but I’m Kuldip Gill from Canada and I have reservations” He says ” You’re late! and slams the slider shut. What seemed like an eternity later he opened the door, stepped outside and slammed the door shut behind him and leaned into me and said ” Why are you late?” I said it was because the GPS directions kept leading me to the wrong area and I’m very sorry I’m 15 minutes late. He smiled and said ” come inside”
The place was amazing, I was hanging out with Italian Hipsters all nice and they made some of the best cocktails I have had.
I’ll be back there for sure, and this time I won’t be late.
